Apprentice Accounts Assistant – Now Recruiting

Are you interested in accountancy and the agricultural sector? Looking for a practical way to start your career while gaining real-world experience?

We’re currently recruiting an Apprentice Accounts Assistant to join our growing practice, specialising in agricultural and rural clients. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, wants to understand how rural businesses operate, and is keen to build a career in accountancy.

As an apprentice with us, you’ll earn while you learn, gain a recognised qualification, and develop specialist knowledge that sets you apart, all within our supportive and friendly team.

What You’ll Gain

• A recognised accountancy apprenticeship qualification

• Hands-on experience working with farmers and rural businesses

• Exposure to agricultural accounts, tax returns, VAT and payroll compliance

• Ongoing training, mentoring, and exam support

• Clear progression opportunities beyond the apprenticeship

But don’t just take our word for it, here’s how two of our team members have started their journey:

Isabelle’s Story

Izzy is a dairy farmer’s daughter, and is actively involved in the family farm near Honiton. While completing her A Levels, she undertook a week’s work experience at Mitchells, which she thoroughly enjoyed and this confirmed her interest in agricultural accountancy.

Following this, Izzy joined Mitchells in the summer of 2024 and began her apprenticeship training studying towards the AAT qualification. She has recently completed her Level 3 and is now progressing onto Level 4, continuing to build both her technical skills and confidence.

“Growing up on a fast-moving dairy farm gave me a strong work ethic from an early age. The apprenticeship route really appealed to me because I could learn on the job and develop my career in a practical way, without unnecessary time away from real work.

The most rewarding part of my role is the relationships I’ve built with both clients and colleagues. Meeting and speaking with clients is the most enjoyable part of my day, and being able to help and advise them across different areas of farm accounting is something I really value.”

As an active member of Yarcombe Young Farmers Club, Izzy is deeply rooted in the local agricultural community. During her time at Mitchells, she has gained hands-on experience assisting our partner James Biggs with bookkeeping, accounts preparation and tax work, applying her studies directly to real-world situations.

Edward’s Story

Ed grew up on his family farm near Ilminster, where his family run a herd of Devon cattle. From a young age, he gained valuable experience on the farm, which sparked his desire to build a career within the agricultural sector.

Ed joined Mitchells in the summer of 2023, and continues to support the family farm alongside his role. He is currently studying for his Level 4 AAT qualification, having successfully completed Level 3, combining practical experience with professional training.

“Being part of a small, close-knit team has made the start of my accounting career so much easier. Everyone is happy to help, and working with farming clients means I’m supporting an industry I’ve been part of for most of my life.

I’ve been able to link what I’m doing in the office to topics I’ve been studying, making those connections has helped both my learning and my confidence.”

During his time at Mitchells, Ed has developed strong practical skills in all aspects of accountancy and is working closely with our clients carrying out bookkeeping on farm and providing clients with software training. He is now also assisting with the training and support of new members of staff, reflecting both his growing confidence and the trust placed in him by the Mitchells team.

Is This Role Right for You?

We’re looking for someone who:

• Has an interest in accountancy and the agricultural/rural sector

• Is reliable, organised, and keen to learn

• Enjoys practical, hands-on work

• Is happy working as part of our close-knit team, as well as independently.

No previous accountancy experience is required.
